Charities unite to raise social fund cuts concerns

Twenty organisations have written a letter expressing deep concern at the government’s proposals to abolish crisis loans and community care grants, which act as the ultimate safety net for those in need of support.

Funding is being passed to local authorities at a time when there are cuts in central government grants, also many organisations that provide support are closing due to funding cuts.  The letter highlights concerns that those in need will be driven into the hands of illegal moneylenders or resorting to high-cost credit, especially as there is with no statutory obligation to ensure the emergency support is provided.
As the Lords prepares to debate social fund reform this week, the letter published in the Guardian urges Lord Freud and the government to rethink these proposals and ensure that the money paid to councils is ring-fenced and a replacement scheme delivered.
