Disabled people's housing threatened

A broad range of organisations have come together to express their opposition to the government's plans to change rules for Housing Benefit in supported housing.

10/10/2011

The organisations fear that the government's proposals will jeopardise the income stream of housing providers and lead to even less supported housing being available in future. The proposals threaten to reduce the housing options of many people in extreme need, including disabled people in particularly difficult circumstances.

The statement calls for government to put a number of key principles at the heart of supported housing policy. These include: benefit and funding rules that respect a real right to independent living, and a right to higher Housing Benefit to meet the needs of disabled people.
