DLA inquiry – evidence wanted

Parliament’s Work and Pension Select Committee has decided to conduct an inquiry into coalition government plans to replace DLA with ‘Personal Independence Payment’ (PIP).

19/07/2011

The plans would introduce new rules so that fewer people would be eligible for PIP. Government aims to cut the spending on DLA/PIP by 20 per cent.

The Inquiry will be led by the chairperson of the Committee, disabled Labour MP Anne Begg. The inquiry will look at things like the implications of the planned rule changes.

Inclusion London opposes the coalition government’s proposals. A 20 per cent cut in spending on DLA London could mean at least 32,000 disabled people in London losing their benefit, causing more exclusion and poverty. No case has been made for removing DLA – which is meant to cover the additional costs of impairment and disabling barriers. We also think DLA is needed even more today in the context of growing barriers disabled due to cuts in government public spending and the low priority being given to equality.

The deadline for written evidence is Friday 2 September. Short submissions are invited from organisations and individuals. You can find the terms of reference at the link below.

We will be responding to the call for evidence: please tell us your view. You can find our response to the earlier inquiry on the government’s changes to DLA below and sources of more evidence.
