Government should respect Article 19
Inclusion London responded to the inquiry by the Joint Committee of Human Rights, into the implementation of the right to independent living for disabled people, as guaranteed by Article 19, UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Our submission argued that Article 19 was not being furthered by government policy. In fact, we argued, government policy in restricting eligibility for Disability Living Allowance, disability employment benefits, closing the Independent Living Fund, weakening the public sector equality duties and other policies ran directly counter to the letter and spirit of Article 19. We strongly welcomed the JCHR’s inquiry and called for government policy to support independent living – including by reversing its restrictions to DLA and other policies.
