EHRC publishes hate crime report
13/09/2011
Disability hate crime that reaches the media and courts is just the tip of the iceberg, according to a new report published by Equality and Human Rights Commission, (EHRC). For many disabled people harassment is commonplace but accepted as inevitable. Crimes go unreported because disabled people fear they will not be believed or lack information about where to turn.
The ‘Hidden in Plain Sight’ report highlights the systemic failure by public authorities to recognise the extent and impact of harassment and abuse of disabled people, take action to prevent it happening and intervene effectively when it does. The report sets out seven core recommendations which state specific measures for each relevant sector, which EHRC believes will make a major difference.
