Maria Miller to face questions on the impact of welfare reforms on disabled people.
Urge your MP to attend the All Party Parliamentary Disabled People’s Group meeting 24 April
Maria Miller, (Minister for Disabled People) will be attending the All Party Parliamentary Disabled People’s Group (APPDPG) which is focusing on the consultation on Personal Independence Payment including the impact on disabled people.
We believe the government has not taken into account the devastating impact on disabled people of all the cuts in welfare benefits and services, which would have been revealed if a full equality impact assessment had been completed.
The government has also said that DLA is seen as out of work benefit and that it prevents disabled people from finding employment, while in fact according to a recent survey, 56% of DLA recipients who are employed said they may have to stop work if their DLA was cut.
The meeting gives a good opportunity to ask Maria Miller if the Government is willing to undertake an equality impact assessment on the accumulated impact of the cuts in services and benefits and to challenge the assertion that DLA prevents disabled people from working.
Please write to you MP asking them to attend the meeting and also request that they ask Maria Miller 3 questions contained in our template letter. Please amend the letter as appropriate, especially the section in italics. The template is available for download below.
